Obituary

Richard H. "Dick" Stambaugh, age 89, of Walnut Creek and formerly of Canton, died December 21 at Walnut Hills Retirement Home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Canton on January 24, 1920, he was a lifelong resident of the Canton area until he moved to Walnut Hills with his wife, Marian, who survives. His parents, Merle and Winifred and a brother; Jack preceded him in death. He married Marian Frith in Canton on August 15, 1941. Five Children and their spouses also survive. They are R. Craig and Shirley Stambaugh of Williamsburg, Virginia, Bruce and Neva Stambaugh of Millersburg, Claudia and Denny Yarnell of Louisville, Jim and Linda Stambaugh of Louisville, and Elaine and Rich Barkan of Canton. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Stambaugh, Carrie Stambaugh Bert, Nathan Stambaugh, Matt and Brett Stambaugh, Kristen Bailey and Jackie Ulrich. Dick also had six great-grandchildren, Evan, Davis and Maren Bert and Seth, Elanor and Peter Bailey. Dick graduated from Canton Township (now Canton South) High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. He attended the University of Akron. He retired after 43 years from Goodyear Aerospace Corp. in Akron as a project engineer. A veteran of World War II, Dick served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. San Diego. Dick enjoyed serving in the community. The organizations to which he belonged mirrored his many interests. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Canton, was a founding member of the Game Reserve Association, and was an active member of the Sugarcreek Chapter of the Ohio Archeological Society until his illness. Dick also served for 34 years on the Stark County Regional Planning Commission, and held leadership positions in the Stark County Hot Stove Baseball League for many years. Dick had many hobbies that he enjoyed sharing with his family, friends and strangers alike. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. He loved to hunt and fish, and built a cabin on Clendening Lake for the family to enjoy. He had and extensive Indian artifact collection, and over the years gave many historical talks to area schools, clubs and organizations. A memorial service will be held in Christ United Methodist Church 3500 Cleveland Ave. N.W., Canton on Saturday, December 26 at noon with Pastors Norma Bates and Dr. Nancy Conley officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon in the church. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery prior visitation. The family offers special appreciation to the loving staff at Walnut Hills Retirement Home and the caring staff of Hospice of Holmes County for their kind and professional care.
