Pauline F. Whitacre, age 95, of Canton, passed away on July 27, 2022, following a brief illness at the Inn at Belden Village. She was born on February 24, 1927, in Canton to Victor and Clare (Scott) Frey and was a graduate of Lehman High School class of 1945 and The Ohio State University class of 1950. Pauline was an avid golfer beginning at age 10 with her family. She played at Ohio State where she was a 3-time team National Champion. In 2007 she was presented with a Varsity “O” from the school for her contributions to the women’s golf team. She could be found locally at courses including Brookside Country Club, Shady Hollow, as well as Congress Lake. Pauline won the WOSGA State Amateur Tournament 3 times where she participated for 50 consecutive years. She won the Women’s Akron District Golf Association Championship 3 times. In 2010 she was a member of the inaugural class of the Stark County Amateur Golf Hall of Fame.
She taught various levels school in physical education including Purdue University, Lorain Middle School, Timken High School, and Canton Country Day School. Pauline celebrated 57 years of marriage to John B. Whitacre Jr, who preceded her in death in 2011. Pauline loved to travel with John to golf destinations across the country.
Along with her husband she is preceded in death by her brothers Robert, William, and twin brother Paul Frey. She is survived by her children Lynn Whitacre-Cart, Janet (Paul) Kaboth, and John B. Whitacre III; grandchildren Lila Cart, Christopher Kaboth, and Stephen (Erin) Kaboth; great grandchildren Alex, Ian, Ella, and Emilia.
Private graveside services will be held for the family. Memorial donations may be made in Pauline’s honor to the Ohio State Women’s Golf Team or a local golf charity of your choice.
