Judith Nusbaum Obituary

Judith Nusbaum, age 95, of Canton passed away on Friday October 20, 2023. Judy was born January 24, 1928 to Sam and Sonya Sklar in Brooklyn, New York.  She knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age.  In fact, she taught her first class at the age of six to the neighborhood girls and their dolls.  She was an excellent student and was the Valedictorian of her class.  She met her lifelong friends and avocation at Queens College where they spent many hours together at the Queens Community Theater.  Judy received her master’s degree in Dramatic Literature from Columbia University.   She was dedicated to education and taught in New York before marrying Jerry Nusbaum from Canton, Ohio.  Her teaching career spanned seventy years as she taught high school, college, pregnant young women, speech, directing plays, teaching citizenship, and facilitating a Yiddish class.   However, teaching English as a Second Language, touched her heart.  She became life-long friends with many newly arrived families, who reminded her of her own immigrant parents.   Judy had a lifelong love of literature, theater, painting, music, and dance.  She was an avid reader, had a quick wit, and a keen sense of language.  In addition, Judy loved nature, spending every summer camping with her family.    She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Nusbaum, siblings Fanny Horowitz, George Sklar, and Benjamin Sklar.  She is survived by her beloved children Amy Nusbaum and Eric Nusbaum, nephews David (Linda) Sklar, and Jeff (Dale) Sklar, Bill (Jill) Sklar, Alan (Diane) Sklar, and many great-nephews and nieces. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 23, 2023 at Canton Hebrew Cemetery at 1:00 PM, Rabbi Komerofsky presiding. The funeral will be livestreamed at arnoldfuneralhomesfacebook.
