Joseph Amato, aged 85, of Canton, peacefully passed away on October 6, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center after enduring complications stemming from heart failure. Born on June 19, 1938, in Canton to the late Matthew Amato and Tresa (Pensato) Rufo, Joseph was a proud graduate of Canton Central Catholic High School, Class of 1957. Affectionately known as "Calypso Joe," he was a true "Jack of all trades," having served as a North Canton Police Officer, owned his own barbershop, and contributed his skills to the Ford Motor Company. Joseph was a holder of a remarkable 10th-degree black belt in Judo.
Joseph's faith played a significant role in his life, guiding his actions and principles. He had a deep passion for learning and relished any challenge that came his way. In his retirement years, he not only conquered the world of computers but also became proficient in building them. His intelligence, kindness, and generosity were hallmarks of his character. He cherished the company of his family and friends, warmly opening his home to all who came. Joseph's sense of humor and the amusing emails he shared will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Phyllis, and their children: Joseph Amato, Enrico Amato, Teresa Amato, and her fiancé Donald Evrard, along with his daughter-in-law Molly Amato. His legacy lives on through his beloved grandchildren: Anna, Elizabeth, and Maria DeChellis. Joseph is also survived by his sister Marie Gang, and brother Rick Amato of Wellsville. He was preceded in death by his brother Gary Amato and nephew Lawrence (Larry) Gang.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Arnold Funeral Home, located at 1517 Market Ave N, from 5-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, with his final resting place at Calvary Cemetery.
