Evelyn Herman Obituary

Evelyn Herman, age 97, of Canton passed away July 14, 2021. She was born August 21, 1923, to Hershel “Harry” and Beatrice (Matthews) Barnett. She graduated from Lehman High School and attended Ohio State University. She was a lifelong member of Temple Israel and the Jewish Community Center. She was proud of the many years of leadership service that she and her Mother, "Butz" gave to the B'nai B'rith Women. She was also involved in the Temple Israel Sisterhood and was an elected officer in both.

She was a community volunteer and was a Red Cross volunteer at Timken Mercy Hospital. She received a 50-year Service Medal to the American Red Cross "Grey Ladies" at the hospital; as her service began when she was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, with her husband Leonard, a Captain in the Signal Corps.

Evelyn’s family was her priority.  She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.  Prior to her parents’ deaths, she and her husband, Bob, oversaw their care. She and her brother, Jim, were more than just siblings and he joined Evelyn and Bob in common interests attending concerts at Blossom Music Center and the Canton Symphony and traveled to Europe. After Bob’s death, she and Jim played for many years in a weekly card game. She was a devoted mother to her four children: Barbara, David, Howard and Douglas, She enjoyed attending all their activities and was active in their school’s PTA.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard Leopold and Robert Herman, and her son, Douglas Leopold.

Evelyn is survived by her brother, James Barnett; daughter Barbara (Jerry) King of California, their children Laura and Benjamin; son David Leopold of Cincinnati and his sons Sam and Jordan; son Howard (Marsha) Leopold of Canton their children Kim, Chris and Craig; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday 10 AM at North Lawn Cemetery with Rabbi David Komerofsky officiating. Memorials may be made to Temple Israel.
