Edmond DiGiacomo Obituary

Edmond J. DiGiacomo, 1937-2023.

Ed DiGiacomo, 85, died peacefully at home on May 1, 2023. He was born in Canton in 1937 to Pete and Oliva (Cipriani) DiGiacomo. He graduated with an electrical major from Timken Vocational High School in 1955, while also taking college prep courses in night school at McKinley High School. Following graduation, he joined a family construction company in Chicago and became a journeyman plumber. He joined the U.S. Army in 1960 and served in the 293rd Corps of Army Engineers in Germany. After his army service, he returned to Canton and was employed by Monarch Rubber Company in Hartville. His love of the Hartville area began as a youth when he was a caddie at Congress Lake Country Club. Ed’s career at Monarch (which later became Teledyne-Monarch) spanned over 30 years. He began as a QC inspector and finished as the head of plant engineering. Following Teledyne-Monarch’s closure, he worked as assistant to the Stark County Sanitary Engineer until his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling and spending winters in Florida. He was very proud of his family and always said that he had a wonderful life.

Ed’s community service began early when he was asked to serve on the Hartville Planning Commission and Board of Public Affairs. He was soon elected as a member of Hartville Village Council and served 10 years in that position. Finally, he was elected Mayor of Hartville – he served 16 years (4 terms) as mayor.

Ed chaired and served on numerous boards and committees, including: Hartville Community Charitable Trust, Congress Lake Property and Personnel Committees, Lake Township Historical Society, Lake YMCA Board, Stark County CIC, Stark County Regional Planning, 1990-91 Class of Leadership Stark County, Hartville Lions Club, and Hartville Fire Department Board.

Ed met his love and “best buddy,” Sandy (Martz), at Monarch. They were married in 1963, built their lifetime home in Hartville in 1964, began their family in 1965, and happily spent 60 years of marriage together. They had four wonderful sons, Rob, Marc, Gregg and Dave.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his son Rob, his brother Tony, his brother and sister-in-law Pete and Cindy, his in-laws Ray and Lucille Martz, his brother-in-law Tom Fulmer, and his nephews Jeff and Todd Fulmer.

Ed is survived by his wife, Sandy, and his sons and their families: Marc and Angela DiGiacomo and children Evan, Lauren and Ava; Gregg and Tracy DiGiacomo and children Luke and Anna; Dave and Jennifer DiGiacomo and children Natalie, Andrew and Aaron; daughter-in-law Jenny Swygert and Rob’s daughters Kerry (Ryan) Stoll, Rachel (Lee) Riley and Laura DiGiacomo; and great-granddaughter Anna Stoll. Additional surviving family members include sisters-in-law Lois (Gamble) DiGiacomo-Jacobson and Judy (Martz) Fulmer, and brother-in-law Ken Martz, and their families. His much-loved DiGiacomo Cousins were always a part of his life.

Following Ed’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Calling hours will take place from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Arnold Funeral Parlor, 504 West Maple Street, Hartville.
