David Hartung Obituary

David L. Hartung, age 83, of Canton, Ohio passed away March 5, 2021, following a brief illness.  Born March 8, 1937 to the late Paul W. Sr. and Leona (Hilty) Hartung, David was a proud graduate of Lehman High School, class of 1955 and Kiski Preparatory School, in Pennsylvania, class of 1956.  He continued his education at Bowling Green State University.  Following college, David began his lifelong career at The Belden Brick Company. There, he served as a member of the Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary. In 1960, David met “Polly” (Novella Polinori), whom he married in December of 1961. David served the Canton community though his support of many philanthropic organizations and community projects.  David was active in the American Red Cross, the United Way, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival.  He served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Inverness Homeowners Association and was a member of the Vocational Advisory Committee for Oakwood-Glenwood Schools. David was a part of the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Retired Executives Club, and Trinity United Church of Christ.

Those who knew David best know of his passion for golf and playing cards. As a member of Brookside County Club, there were few weekends that he was not swinging a club or gathered around a table playing cards with friends.  David was an avid Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Mostly, David was proud of his wife, Polly, two children, David L. and Libby (Elizabeth) and two, beautiful granddaughters, Gianna and Ceila. David was rarely seen without a genuine smile on his face.  Even when he was not feeling his best, he found humor in the situation to put everyone else at ease. He will be missed by many but loved eternally.

David is preceded in death by his sisters, Marilyn Mitchell, Beverly Deuble and a brother, Paul W. Hartung, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Novella (Polly) Hartung; children David L. Hartung Jr of Cincinnati and Elizabeth (Matthew) Cathlina of Libertyville, IL; grandchildren Gianna and Celia Cathlina; several nieces and nephews.

Private, family services are being held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Canton Preservation Society, 131 Wertz Ave. Canton, Ohio 44708, to support the Hartung House, David’s grandparents, historical home.
