Charles E. “Charlie” Swartz, age 91, of Canton, passed away Saturday July 23, 2022. He was born in Lake Township on December 26, 1930 to the late Russel and Ruth (Wenger) Swartz. He was an Army Korean War Veteran. He was life long farmer who drove a school bus for Plain Local Schools for 50 years. He was a member of St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church. Charlie served on the Stark County Fair Board for 60 years, as vice president and on many committees. A favorite accomplishment was starting the first tractor pull in 1964. In 2009, Charlie was inducted into the Ohio Fairs Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Stark County 200 Bushel Corn Club winning top production 7 times. He was a member of Stark County Farm Bureau, Soil and Water Conservation Board, A.S.C. and farm service agency, Ohio Fair Management Association and Plain Grange. He was a 4-H advisor for 30 years. He served 25 years on Lake Township Zoning Board.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Beverly “Jeanne”; children Debra (Terry) Tournoux, Ed Swartz, David (Judy) Swartz, Kevin (Phyllis) Swartz; grandchildren Aaron (Lindsay) Tournoux, Zachary (Brittany) Tournoux, Marissa Tournoux, Kyle Swartz, Keith Swartz, David Swartz Jr.; great-granddaughter Avery Tournoux; and sister Eleanor (Thomas) Jackson. Preceded in death by sisters Arlene Swartz and Harriet (Lloyd) Leadbetter; and great-granddaughter Harper Tournoux.
Calling hours are Thursday 5-8 PM and Friday prior to services 10-11 AM all at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church. Funeral services are Friday 11 AM in the church with Pastor Angel Jackson officiating. Final resting place is St. Jacob’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Stark County Agriculture Society (for Junior Fair Charlie Swartz Scholarship) or to St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church.
