Betty (Betsy) W. Oby passed away on April 19, 2021 at the age of 91. She was born in Delaware, Ohio to Joseph and Nancy (Skidmore) Wheeler on January 7, 1930. She graduated from Willis High School where she was a cheerleader and band member, and then worked at Ohio Wesleyan University where she met her husband David Oby. They moved to North Canton where they raised their four children and worked hard to ensure all of them could receive a college education. She also served as the librarian at Portage Elementary School.
Betsy was very active in her community, including being a long-time volunteer at Aultman Hospital, a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer docent at the First Ladies Museum, and volunteered to read to children at Orchard Hill Elementary School. She was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she served on various leadership committees. A lover of language and an avid reader, she enjoyed swimming, yoga, gardening, and was a beautiful sewer and quilter. Betsy was an intelligent lady who was determined to learn something new every day. She loved nature and especially enjoyed sunsets. Betsy spent many hours making countless quilts for nursing homes and for babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Akron Children’s Hospital, as well as special “Nana” blankets for all of her grandchildren.
Betsy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who valued family above all else, and was greatly proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, David Oby, Jr. of Cleveland, Matthew Oby (Paula) of Akron, Mary Susan Oby Douglas (Samuel) of North Canton, Kathryn Oby Maj (Richard), grandchildren, David Oby III, Catherine Oby, Kim Oby Cartnick (Chris), Emily Oby, Claire Oby Factor (Kevin), Erin and Matthew Halbach, Samuel Maj (Lauren), Sarah Maj, Rebecca Maj Giaier (Kevin), and step-grandchildren Christopher and Cassandra Douglas. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Sadie and Grace Cartnick, Haley Factor, and Theodore Maj, two nieces and two nephews.
She is reunited with her husband of 50 years, David Oby, Sr., who predeceased her in 2002, her sister, Virginia Smith, and her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the David and Betsy Oby Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Faith United Methodist Church, 300 9th St NW, North Canton, OH 44720.
