Bernice E. (Deckerd) O'Wesney

Bernice E. O’Wesney, age 103, passed away on May 5, 2021 following a short illness. Bernice was born February 25, 1918 in Canton to Wilbur and Hazel (Choffin) Deckerd.

On September 29, 1940 she married John O’Wesney, they were married 38 years until he passed away in 1978. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by sisters, Beulah Smith and Dorothy Marlatt and brother, Eugene Deckerd.

She was a member of the first freshman class of Canton Township (now Canton South) High School graduating in 1935. She then attended Canton Actual Business School. She was employed for many years by the Dunlap-DuPont Insurance Agency. In her younger years Bernice played volleyball in the Canton City Leagues and bowled in various women’s and mixed leagues. She was an excellent card player and played frequently until recently.

Bernice is survived by sons, Thomas (Janine) of Jackson Township and William of Alliance, Ohio; grandchildren, Tim O’Wesney of San Clemente, CA, Kellie (James) Contrucci of Louisville, Ohio, Denise O’Wesney of Jackson township; five great grandchildren and two nieces.

A graveside service will be 1:30pm Monday at North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Arnold & Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave. N.
