Bernard LeRoy Reed entered this world on Friday, March 6, 1931, at his grandparents home in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Bernard "Dick" Reed and Vee Reed Catalin, and brother of Elwood "Woody" Reed. It was the Great Depression and the family lived in Jackson and Rives Junction, Michigan, and Toledo, Lima, Huron, and Sandusky, Ohio. Bernie graduated from Sandusky High School in 1949 then worked at the 4 and 20 Diner, and on Great Lakes barges, and other jobs.
During the Korean War, Bernie served as SSGT Personnel Specialist, with the 3082d Aviation Depot Group at Deep Creek AFB in Fairchild, Washington, and in the Azores. After discharge, Bernie attended Bowling Green State University where he met Susan Scott, his future bride. Bernie and Sue married and settled in Lakewood, Ohio, welcomed daughters Christine and Cheryl, and Bernie worked as a Federal Reserve bank auditor. The family moved to Canton, and later North Canton, where Bernie worked in commercial credit for First National Bank (now Chase).
In retirement, Bernie volunteered with SCORE, and as an usher at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and he and Sue traveled, played golf and bridge, and spent time with friends and family until Sue passed away in 2017. Bernie left this world at home on Friday, April 9, 2021, and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Christine and Rev. Alan Lamb, daughter Cheryl Fahey, special niece Vee Lynn Reed, and other special relatives and friends.
A graveside service will take place at 3:00 p.m. Wed. April 14, at North Lawn Cemetery with social distancing protocols observed. The service will be streamed on the Arnold Funeral Home Facebook Page.
