Archie Ray Sommers

Archie Ray Sommers, age 60, of Uniontown went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday July 20, 2021. He was born September 3, 1960 to Henry and Susan (Troyer) Sommers of Uniontown, Ohio. As a young boy, “Arch” liked riding three wheelers with his older sister, Alma Kay and older brother Henry Jr. He enjoyed making go karts and hunting with “Jr”. Arch and Jr did everything together. Where one went, so did the other! (And now he did it again!) 

He volunteered as a jack-of-all-trades and worked in the dining hall at Camp Hebron in Pennsylvania. On his days off, he helped on a local farm and would make pizza for the family. Later, Arch did years of voluntary service at a nursing home in El Dorado, Arkansas. He always spoke fondly of those years and the good memories he made.  

Archie Ray loved doing things with his hands. Whether it was a vacuum cleaner or a bicycle, he was always the one to go to when you needed something fixed. He gifted many people with sweepers that he found along the road and was able to repair! Chocolate chip cookies were his specialty in the kitchen. It brought him great joy to give his nieces, Amber and Megan, baked goods that he created. He worked for Hartville Kitchen and spent a few years working as a painter thinking highly of his boss and friend, Steve. 

Archie loved to talk and tell jokes. He had a great sense of humor and liked to make others smile. He especially enjoyed making kids laugh and usually had a pocket full of smarties to share with those nearby. Some of his favorite stories were of visiting friends in Belize, trips to Florida in the winter time, and trying to get free food from McDonald’s since they used his name “Arch” in the “Golden Arches!” 

Arch and his brother Jr spent a lot of time together. They watched old western movies, went out to eat, visited hunting stores, and enjoyed ordering from Bob’s Pizza. They often wore matching camo hats or jackets. In the summer, you could find them camping near a pond where they could fish and catch bullfrogs. They loved spending time with their nieces, sister, and mom. 

In more recent years, Arch lived at Altercare of Hartville. He advocated for the residents and took surveys on what snacks they wanted in the vending machines. He enjoyed watching the Browns games on TV and meeting his great nephews, Jackson, Lucas, and Wyatt at the park next door. 

Archie Ray’s mother remembers when he was younger, he would look in the mirror and say “when I get to Heaven, Jesus will give me two good eyes to see out of.” We are certain Arch is seeing clearly now and is rejoicing with his father and brothers who are in Heaven with him.  

Preceded in death by his father Henry; brother Henry Jr. and infant brother Levi; and brother-in-law Wayne Hershberger. He is survived by his mother Susan; sister Alma Kay Hershberger; nieces Amber Hershberger, Megan (Mike) Drake; great-nephews Jackson, Lucas and Wyatt Drake; and numerous other relatives and friends. 

Calling hours are Friday 2-4 & 6-8 PM at Cornerstone Community Chapel. Funeral services are Saturday 10 AM at the church with Pastor Ron Embleton officiating.
