Obituary

Yvonne Slyker Cave, age 81, of North Canton died February 20, 2007 in Massillon Affinity Hospital after a 3 month illness. She was born on November 29, 1925 in Huron, Ohio. On scholarships she worked her way thru college at Bowling Green University and the College of Wooster; followed by 3 years at Union Theological Seminary where her favorite teacher was Robert McAfee Brown. Yvonne is now a member of Christ Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Richard K. Cave, who was also active in the work of the church. Their favorite vacation spots were Williamsburg, Chautauqua Institution and Martha's Vineyard where they would rent bicycles and explore towns and beaches. Yvonne was devoted to the Presbyterian Church wherever the couple lived. A highlight was serving on the Library Committee at John Knox Presbyterian Church, where she initiated the Children's Reading Program. She had been trained in Library Science and reorganized the church library, but her greatest joy was working with the children. She served on committees of the larger church at every level, including the General Assembly Discipleship and Worship Council. When Lois Stair was elected the first woman Moderator of the General Assembly, Yvonne was thrilled. During Moderator Stair's visit to Muskingum Valley Presbytery, she spent the night at the home of Yvonne and Dick. Yvonne supported Massillon Central Presbyterian's Declaration of Sanctuary in 1984 and befriended Ana, a Salvadoran refugee, protected by the church, along with her two children, for almost five years. Yvonne arranged for Ana to speak at the Triennium Conference at Purdue, an assembly of 6,000 women, with a mission emphasis on Central America. Yvonne was a woman of many interests. She was a member of the McKinley Stamp Club. She loved classical music, always subscribing to the Canton Symphony. Her radio was constantly tuned to WKSU-FM. Her favorite sports figures were Pete Sampras and Michelle Kwan. Yvonne is survived by her brother, George B. (Barry) Smith of Pasadena, California. Barry escorted her to the Rose Bowl Parade on several occasions and treated her to an elegant trip to Palm Springs not too long ago. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 24, at 11 o'clock in the chapel of Christ Presbyterian Church Canton with viewing hours at 10 o'clock. The Rev. David L. de Vries and Rev. Douglas Patton will officiate. Final resting place is Scott Cemetery in Huron. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, in Memory of Yvonne, are suggested. (Arnold 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
