William (Bill) H. Van Camp, age 68, passed away Saturday February 8, 2014 at home in Florence, SC with his wife Yvonne at his side. He was born on June 1, 1945 in Hartville to the late Wiley H. and Lucille (Chain) Van Camp, and graduated from Marlington High School. Bill worked as a Machinist at Monarch Rubber in Hartville for 35 years then at General Tire in Charlotte, North Carolina for 5 years. William H. Van Camp was an extraordinarily accomplished, well known and respected martial artist and martial arts teacher. Master Van Camp taught a great many students the martial arts in his schools in Ohio and South Carolina, several of his students have achieved high levels and operate schools of their own. Master Van Camp began his study of the martial arts in the early 1960s under his lifelong teacher Sijo Andrew Tamper, he studied under him until his passing in 2004. Master Van Camp was Sijo Tampers highest level student and appointed by him as the inheritor of Yee Chong martial arts. He created and taught an innovative program at Winthrop University in South Carolina which taught handicapped students martial arts as a means of therapy. Sijo Van Camp was sought after to teach seminars in the martial arts throughout the United States during his martial arts career. He was also actively involved in full contact kickboxing in the late 1980s and 90s, coaching a successful team and champion athletes. Master Van Camp embodied the best parts of the martial arts through continuously training and passion for learning, achieving black belt levels in several other styles of martial arts. He led by example to his students through his tremendous work ethic and continued passion for learning and sharing the martial arts. Master Van Camp will be remembered by his students and peers for his passionate teaching, training, infectious personality and loyal friendships. He will be missed by his family, friends and students tremendously. He is survived by his wife Yvonne, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on July 3, 2013; children Bill (Teri) Van Camp, Scott Van Camp, Aaron Van Camp, Rachael (Sean) Kelly; grandchildren Taylor, Hunter, Coltan "Gunner", Tanner, Christian, Gracie, Peirce and Parker; siblings James (Barb) Van Camp, Nola Mae Garman, John (Lee) Van Camp, Mary Lou (Lloyd) Holona; parents-in-law Cecil and Shirley Lowe; siblings-in-law, Cliff Lowe, Steven (Ruby) Lowe, Brad (Shirley) Lowe; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Crystal Cumbie; brother Danny F. Van Camp; brother-in-law Thomas Garman; and nephew Ted Garman. Calling hours are Wednesday 5:30- 8:00 PM at Arnold Funeral Home, Hartville where a tribute will be starting at 6:30 PM.
