Obituary

William C. Snyder, 82, of North Canton, passed away on October 30, 2014 surrounded by his loving family following a ten-year bout with Multiple Myeloma. Bill was born on October 5, 1932 to the late Carl and Mildred Snyder. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1950, and then from Mount Union College in 1954 where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following college, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Bill was a lifetime member of the First Church of the Resurrection, having served on the Consistory and the finance committee for many years. He was a 50-year member of the Canton Lodge #60 F&A.M. He was a former trustee of the Eastern Stark County Mental Health Center. Bill was founder and owner of Lake Realty and Insurance in Hartville, Ohio, which became the William C Snyder Insurance Agency in 1969. He was a business partner with Ellis Erb for many commercial building and development projects over the years. They became long-time friends. Hartville, Ohio was always at the center of Bill's life work. He loved being in Hartville, working there, and establishing many friendships. He always made time to talk with people, joke with them, and help them. Bill was very philanthropic at heart. He served as chairman of Hartville's Bicentennial Committee. When Lake High School needed to raise money to build a new high school football stadium, Bill stepped in to help coordinate efforts and donate support for the "Lake 1-2-3" fund raiser. Bill was also a long time member of the Hartville Lion's Club, serving as secretary for many years. Long-time members will remember Bill for his tongue-in-cheek writing of the minutes. The reading of the minutes was always anticipated with great joy. The notes were unpredictable and witty in nature. They were read at the end of the meetings because they were "a tough act to follow." He led in a quiet way and never sought acknowledgement. He always possessed a great sense of humor and was a man of few, but powerful words. Bill had nicknames for everything and always evoked a fast smile and little chuckle from others. Even when he was ill, he possessed a great sense of humor and strength of acceptance. He could be heard sharing little quips like, "Be of good cheer" or "Goodbye and good luck". Bill loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends. He would do anything to help someone. He loved to plan trips or find fun things to do in addition to what he needed to do. He was always very active and loved to take daily walks spanning many miles. He especially liked to walk from Vanderbilt Beach to Clam Pass and Wiggins Pass in Naples, Florida. He had an uncanny knack for finding shark teeth as he walked. He was an avid and accomplished golfer obtaining five "hole-in-one" scores during his lifetime and was a loyal Cleveland and Ohio State sports fan. Bill will be greatly missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him. He had a special connection with everyone. In addition to his parents, Bill, was preceded in death by his brother Richard Snyder. He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Judy (Van Nostran), son William (Melanie) Snyder, daughter Kellie (John) Ehlers, grandchildren Shelby and Charlie Snyder, and brothers-in-law Paul, William (Diane), and Douglas Van Nostran along with many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at First Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Dr. Bruce Mont officiating. Calling hours are from 10 - 12 followed by the funeral service at 12 o'clock noon. There will be a private burial following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to First Church of the Resurrection (901 E. Tuscarawas St., Canton, Ohio, 44707) or Harbor Lights Hospice (25 S. Main St, Monroe Falls, OH, 44262).
