William R. Shew, age 76, of Canton, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Fort Madison, Iowa on August 29, 1930 to the late Frederick and Mary (Blaikie) Shew. A graduate of Norwalk High School in Norwalk, OH, he then attended Western Reserve University on a basketball scholarship where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration. Bill served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. In April of 1966, Bill, who was a fourth generation papermaker, founded and built Chipboard Inc, and served as its president until 1971. Chipboard became a wholly owned subsidiary of Greif Brothers Corporation. He served as President of Greif Board Corporation in Massillon until his retirement in 2000. Bill served on the board of Peoples Federal Bank in Massillon and was a member of Clinton Masonic Lodge No 47 and Al Koran Shrine. An avid golfer and fisherman he was a member of Brookside Country Club, The Ocean Reef Club of Key Largo, Florida, Anglers Club, and Card Sound Golf Club. Survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 51 years, Harriette Shew (Orebaugh); daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Dr. Robert J. Ripich; son and daughter-in-law, William M. "Chip" and Thea Shew; grandchildren, Alexandra Marie Ripich, Russell Paul, John Charles, William Meeker and Dorothea Ann Shew. He is also survived by two brothers, C. Frank Shew of Massillon, OH and Frederick Shew of Orlando, FL. A private family interment will be held Monday. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, October 10, at 2:30 pm at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Massillon with the Rev. Henry G. Harris officiating. The family will receive friends and guests one hour prior to the memorial service.
