William L.
Kamerer
February 5, 1929 – July 20, 2022
William L. Kamerer, age 93, of Uniontown, passed away on Wednesday July 20, 2022. He was born in Hartville on February 5, 1929 to the late William H. and Eva Viola (Shatzer) Kamerer. A 1947 graduate of Hartville High School, William (Bill) was captain and quarterback for the high school's first football team. He represented his school as first chair trumpeter in the 1946 Ohio Festival Band, and played in the All Ohio Boys Marching Band. A truly gifted trumpet player, his performance of the Flight of the Bumblebee rivaled that of Harry James, and earned him the nickname "hot lips" by friends and family. Music was an important part of his life. He enjoyed singing with barbershop quartets, and performed for many radio shows while stationed in Texas. He was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church (and formerly Grace Lutheran Church), and church choir member for over 60 years.
Bill was committed to serving the people of his community, and to serving his country. He joined the Hartville Volunteer Fire Department at age 16 serving as fireman and later as medic and first responder, for over 45 years. Following high school, he enlisted and served as a flight instructor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
He was a talented carpenter, builder and craftsman. Bill was an integral part of the family business of W.H. Kamerer and Sons Building Contractors, and retired from Schumacher Lumber Company in 1997.
Bill led an active life. He enjoyed fishing for muskies, camping, hiking, traveling the US and Canada in his motorhome, and spending winters in Florida. Special trips were Hawaii and Alaska. He was a member of the North Canton YMCA.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Virginia (Hershberger); children Jeffrey Kamerer, Cynthia (Eric) Stoltz; son-in-law Donald Mautz; grandchildren Tammy Mautz (Daryl) Porter, Mitchell, Eliott and Caroline Kamerer, Scott Stoltz, Erin (Andrew) Lafollete, Callie Stoltz; great-grandchildren Korynn, Steven and Kelsey Porter; brothers Paul and Owen Kamerer, brother-in-law Richard (Zella) Hershberger; other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by daughter Kathy Louise Mautz and sister Naomi Sweitzer.
