"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SAILOR DIED TODAY" William Edward Fashbaugh Sr. age 77 of North Canton and Carrollton, died on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012. It was Gunner Fash's final 'Anchors Aweigh' as he sailed on to the victory in Jesus after a courageous 10 year battle against cancer. He was born September 18, 1934 in Canton Ohio and was the son of the late Edward M. and Gladys Hartswell (Butler) Fashbaugh. Bill spent his youth honing lifelong hunting and trapping skills, and working at Meyers Lake Park as a life guard and part of the maintenance crew. He was a member of the 1952 Class of Lincoln High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955, and was a decorated veteran of the Viet Nam conflict (Navy Achievement Medal with "V" for valor), and retired as a commissioned officer in 1979. Bill then worked as the maintenance manager at Edwin Shaw Hospital in Akron. He was a Boy Scout leader in San Diego, CA; a member of the VFW Post 3747; a 32 degree Mason (Caldwell Lodge). He attended Church of the Savior United Methodist in Canton and Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Carrollton. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Herbert Fashbaugh and grandson Samuel David Fashbaugh. He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 56 years, Miriam (Jones) Fashbaugh; his daughter Gwen (Ron) Johnson of Minerva and three sons, William, Jr. (Janet Norman) Fashbaugh of Seville, Eric Fashbaugh of Canton, and Rev. Edward (Amy Terlizzi) Fashbaugh of North Canton. Two sisters, Lesley Ann Ziegler and Janet Mohler both of Canton; one sister-in-law, Karen (Trenary) Fashbaugh; 9 grandchildren; 2-step grandchildren; 3-step great-grandchildren; one curly-headed great-grandson, Noah William Renteria; and many beloved family members, and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, January 23, 11:00 A.M., at Church of the Savior, 120 Cleveland Ave. SW, Canton, with Pastor Carl Orphanides and Pastor Edward Fashbaugh officiating Calling hours will be Sunday, January 22, at Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home, 4817 Cleveland Ave., NW, Canton, from 2-5 p.m. and one hour prior to the service in church on Monday.A Masonic service will be Sunday 1:45 P.M. Interment will be in North Canton Cemetery. As Bill leaves his last duty station to set sail on his final voyage we bid him, 'fair winds and following seas.' In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Savior.
