Willard P. Loomis, age 95, of Canton died Tuesday evening, August 8, at the Canton Regency of complications after a fall. Willard was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the son of David Prentice and Bertha M. Loomis. The family moved to Canton in 1912. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1929, and from Miami University, School of Business Administration, in 1933. At Miami Willard was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, serving as President his senior year. He was the oldest living member of the Miami DU chapter. He was also a member of the men's leadership honorary, Blue Key, and the business honorary fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. In 1934, he married Helen Corson, of Middletown, Ohio. After making their home in Canton for 27 years they moved to the Turkeyfoot Lake area of Akron in 1961. They resided there until 2000 when they moved back to Canton. They moved to the Canton Regency in 2003. Helen and Willard celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in March 2004, and Helen passed away in September 2004. Willard was associated with his brothers and nephews in the coal business, and was Treasurer of Canton Coal Sales, Inc. and Magnolia Mining Co. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, worked on many United Fund Campaigns, held the longest continuous membership in the YMCA and was a member of Canton Rotary since 1946. In Rotary he was a past Director and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, and had served as Deacon and Trustee. He began his association with this church at age 2. He was also active in the church during the construction years of Camp Wakonda. For many years he was also a member at the Turkeyfoot Island Club. Survivors are a daughter Nancy and son-in-law Stewart E. Williams of Montgomery, Alabama; a son, Dr. Willard C. Loomis and daughter-in-law Bettina Loomis of Irvine, California; grandchildren Mark Williams (Anna) of St. Louis, Keith Williams (Virginia) of Cincinnati, Robin Monteith (Steven) of Reno, NV and Dr. Karen Loomis-Koutoulas (George) of Santa Barbara, CA. Willard also has five great-grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two older brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene A. Loomis and Annabel Loomis, and Frederick C. Loomis and Lois A. Loomis; his Middletown relatives, brother-in-law Alfred Maier, and sisters-in-law Catherine M. Maier and Ruth E. Corson. Arrangements for Willard's funeral have been made by Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home. His funeral service will be on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Christ Presbyterian Church of Canton with Pastor Wendy L. Bausman officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice or to the Memorial Fund of Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. W, Canton, OH 44702.
