Obituary

Wilbur Ray Billings, age 94 of Canton, passed away Monday morning May 28, 2007 at the Canton Christian Home. He was born in Canton on May 22, 1913 to the late Earl J. and Flora (Kehl) Billings. "Bib" graduated from McKinley High School in 1932 where he was on the varsity football, basketball, and track teams and made the all-county football team at center. After graduating he coached football at Lehman High School. First jobs were with Wilson Rubber and Diebold. In 1946 he became a residential plastering contractor with his father and eventually for himself. He was a salesman at Ewing Chevrolet before becoming Athletic Director for the Canton Recreation Department. He retired in 1981 after 19 years of service. For over 20 years during retirement, Wilbur did painting at the House of Loretto. He was a member of First Church of the Resurrection where he served as a church officer and taught Sunday School for 60 years. Since 1956, he was a member of the Canton Elks Club. A sports enthusiast, he umpired and refereed hundreds of baseball, softball, football and basketball games in Stark and neighboring counties. He also coached his sons' Mighty Mite, Junior League, and Senior League baseball teams. Bib was elected to the Canton Basketball and the Canton Fast-Pitch Softball Halls of Fame and he was a charter member of the Canton Shuffleboard Club. In 2001 he won the first "Stan Dunnerstick Award" in honor of his lifelong contributions to the sporting life of Canton, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Katherine; sons and daughters-in-law, Wilbur and Linda Billings of Paw Paw, MI, and Philip and Sue Billings of Annville, PA; daughter Barbara Hazelbaker of West Union, OH; grandchildren, Micah (and Kerri) Billings, Leah (and Mark) Kretschmer, Nathan Billings, Josh (and Jen) Billings, Dan Billings, Jay (and Kim) Hazelbaker, Carrie (and Rob) Fuller, and Amy (and Adam) Watkins; 8 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Lynn Jolly of North Industry, OH; and 8 nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by brother Ross Billings and sisters Ruby Schenk and Maxine Jolly. A memorial service will be held Saturday June 2, 2007, 2:00 PM in First Church of the Resurrection, 901 Tuscarawas St.,E, with Dr. Bruce Mont officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canton Christian Home or Aultman Hospice.
