Obituary

Vernon Perry, Sr. 88, of Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton died Jan. 17, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Born in Palestine, Arkansas Nov. 14, 1924 to the late Bert Andrew and Ruth (Hunnicutt) Perry, he was also preceded in death in death by his wife of 63 years, Rose, sister Louise Bras, brothers Waymond, Lowell and Calvin Perry. Having lived his adult life in the Canton area, he was a self-employed building contractor working with his father, brothers, son and nephew Gary Perry throughout the years. Kitchen cabinetry and roof framing were his specialties. He later retired as a member of the Carpenter's Union Local 69. He is survived by his four children: Elayne Conrad, Denise (John) Morton, Vern (Sue) Perry, Jr., and Annette (Tim) Johnson, stepmother Delia Perry, sisters Lois (Del) Rouse, Yvonne Chellete, brother Joe (Joan) Perry, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The love of his life was his wife and family. He enjoyed dining out, hosting dinner parties featuring his famous 1 ½ inch thick Boston strips and spending quality time with his grandchildren: Cassandra Derry, Stefanie and Rob Hartung, Erica Smith, and Nathan and Meghan Perry. Vern enjoyed playing rhythm guitar, mandolin & the fiddle. He has accompanied various church music services and performed with the "Stardusters" band in the 70's as well as hosting jam sessions with friends, including his brother on lead guitar and daughter on piano. Southern gospel, Country and Bluegrass were his favorites. He excelled in his work, his music and care of his family and was in return much loved by all of them. He was the best father anyone could ever have and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff of Chapel Hill, Evercare and Mercy Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care. Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave., N.W. with Rev. David Tebbs officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 5 P.M.
