Thomas Maxwell Hague, age 86, of Canton, passed away Friday afternoon, May 23, 2008 in his residence. He was born October 12, 1921 in Canton to Herbert Russell and Charlotte (Cole) Hague. Tom was a 1939 Lehman High School graduate and received his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from The Ohio State University in 1943. He served in the U.S Army during WW II as an ASTP and became fluent in the Japanese Language. During his business career he also earned fluency in Dutch, French, Malay and Indonesian languages. Tom worked for Standard Vacuum Oil Company in the Philippines and Indonesia; Lockheed in Japan; The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Australia, Malaysia and was President of Goodyear in Japan. Tom was Area Director of the Far East for Borg Warner Corporation in Hong Kong and Japan. Mr. Hague is a past president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and past president of the Japan America Society of Chicago. Tom retired from the Borg Warner corporate office in Chicago in 1986. His retirement years have all been in Canton. Mr. Hague has been a dedicated and active member of the Canton community. He has served as president of the Canton Art Museum, Canton Chamber of Commerce and supported the Canton Symphony, Stark County Wilderness Society and the Canton Historical Society. Tom also served as advisor to the Japan Institute on The Ohio State University campus and was Executive in Residence in the Business College of The Ohio State University. In Chicago Tom was vice chairman of the Illinois District Export Council, Chairman of the Chicago International Visitors Center and director of the International Trade Club. While residing in Canton Mr. Hague was appointed Honorary Council General for Japan in the State of Ohio and received a medal from the Emperor of Japan for his work in developing and furthering U.S.-Japan business relations during three decades of service. Tom and his wife of 44 years, Margaret, made significant contributions of Asian artifacts to The Chicago Art institute and The Cleveland Art Institute. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret on May 20, 2008; step son Douglas L. Browne, brother, Richard Cole Hague and nephew David R. Hague. He is survived by two step sons and daughters-in-law, Will Browne and Dee Dee Gavigan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jon and Kathy Browne Hendersonville, North Carolina, daughter-in-law Pat Browne of Phoenix, Arizona; step grandchildren, Deirdre Browne of Boston, Massachusetts, Zebulon Browne of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kelly Anne Browne of Tallahassee, Florida, Jeffrey Browne of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Todd Browne of Phoenix, Arizona, and nieces Ann Vicki Hague Englund of Downington, PA and Barbera Hague Miller of Philadelphia, PA. A Christian Science service will be Wednesday evening May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton. A memorial service will also be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Canton with The Reverend Barbara Bond officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church 10-11:00 a.m. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery and Marlboro Cemetary.
