Thelma Mattes, age 96, passed away on November 23, 2021. She was born August 17, 1925 to the late Paul and Mae (Haines) Hannah. She was a lifetime resident of Canton and graduated from Timken High School class of 1943 and attended Bowling Green State University. Following school, she was employed by Republic Steel, then Canton City School system retiring after 14 years of service. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a long-time member of the Canton Women's Club. She was Lifetime member of the Alumni of Timken High School, past President and lifetime member of Canton Junior Sorosis, past president Stark County Women's Federated Club, and Canton Senior Sorosis. Former member of Zion Lutheran Church and current member of St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church.
Preceded in death by her parents, infant son Scott, daughter Cassandra (Cassie) and her husband of 71 years Henry. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Mark and Cynthia Mattes of New Palestine, IN, grandson Scott, Denver CO, granddaughter Kimberly and husband Major Carlo Cappella, along with great grandsons Enzo, Massimo, Dario, and Nico of Hohenfels, Germany. Granddaughter Jamie and husband Dr. David Turer along with great granddaughter Aurora and great grandsons Jackson and Remington of Montclair NJ. Niece Nancy Mattes and extended family Nancy Schoenbaum, son Eric and daughter Heidi Sprague.
Calling hours will be one hour before Memorial Service on Friday December 3 at 3:00 pm to be held at St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the church or the Stark County Heart Association.
