Stanley Friedman, age 92, a lifelong resident of Canton, passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 4th 2016. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Bella Barnett Friedman, and his fraternal twin brother, Murray.
Stanley was a senior at Lehman High School, class of 1942, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Upon graduation, Stanley entered the U.S. Army and after training in the United States, he served in Patton's armored brigade in France and Germany.
After the war, Stanley continued his education by earning a BS in Science at Ohio University, and a Master's Degree in Education at Kent State University. He also participated in several summer graduate internships at the University of California (Berkeley), the University of Rochester and The University of Akron.
Stanley was a teacher and guidance counselor for 36 years in the Plain Local School District. He was a favorite chemistry teacher at Glenwood High School and a guidance counselor at Middlebranch Jr. High School. Additionally, he was the scout master of Troop 7 at the Canton Jewish Center, where he led several trips to the Boy Scout Ranch in Philmont, New Mexico. Stanley had many hobbies including, being an amateur radio operator (NN8M), classical music enthusiast, as well as star gazing, and collecting clocks and watches. He managed the building of a Habitat House sponsored by Temple Israel. After retirement, he volunteered at Mercy Medical Center and was a member of Stollen Moments at Temple Israel. He spent most summers traveling with his family to the National Parks throughout the United States and visited all 50 states. He also enjoyed traveling in Europe, Israel and taking cruises.
Stanley was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher and scout master. He had a quirky sense of humor that put a smile on everyone's face who knew him.
Stanley will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Bernice, whom he was married to for 66 years, daughter Barbara Spera and husband John and son David and wife Lingxia, grandchildren Jodee Haber and husband Dan and Andrew Spera and wife Erin, and great grandchildren Max Spera and Henry Haber. He also leaves sister in-law and brother in-law, Francine and Irv Korman, and their daughters Julie Korman and Melanie and Chris Roddy, and a half-sister Shelly Lemmo (Lenny) and her family Tammy, Caitlyn, and Michelle.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the Bethany Nursing Home who took such good care of Stanley for the last three weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Temple Israel of Canton or Jewish Family Service of Canton.
A Memorial service for Stanley will be held at 12:00 noon at Temple Israel, on Monday March 7 with Rabbi Jon Adland and Rabbi John Spitzer officiating.
