Stanley C. Ewing, age 90, of Canton, was promoted to eternal life on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. He was born March 24, 1921, in Wooster, OH to Charles Clarence (C.C. "Jum") and Mary Florence (Kamp) Ewing. He graduated from Lehman High School in 1939 and attended Miami University (Oxford, OH). Stan Ewing was dedicated to raising his family and serving the Stark County community. By giving to worthy charities and volunteering his time and expertise to civic organizations, he demonstrated exemplary citizenship to Canton, Stark County, and Northeast Ohio. In 1941 he joined the family-owned Chevrolet dealership, and on November 10, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent two years at the Great Lakes Naval Station and then one year in the Pacific on an attack transport USS Kingsbury, where he was awarded a bronze star. Shortly after enlisting, he married Dolores Joan Darr of Canton, to whom he was married for 52 years. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Upon returning home after the war, Ewing started in the parts department of Ewing Chevrolet. After graduation from the Cleveland School of Merchandising and Management in 1948, he joined his father as a Chevrolet dealer. He was especially appreciative of his employees who served the many customers of Ewing Chevrolet. Through his involvement with the family business, Ewing was a member of the National Automobile Dealers' Association, The Ohio Automobile Dealers' Association, and was named President of the Stark County Automobile Dealers' Association. Ewing, in addition to being named a lifetime member of the Automotive Hall of Fame, was recognized by General Motors in 1998 for having been an automobile dealer for over 50 years. A self-starter, Ewing was involved in several community groups. He served the community as past president of the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Chamber's "Award of Appreciation" in 1991 for outstanding service to the community. He was a member of the Canton Rotary Club for over 60 years, serving as President in 1971-72 and then as Governor of Rotary District 665 in 1975-76. Additionally, he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a founding member of the Glenwood's Booster Club, and he was very involved with Plain Local Schools. He was awarded the Spirit of Life Award by the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute. A 70-year member of Church of the Savior United Methodist, Ewing served as President of the Board of Trustees and chaired several councils and committees. An avid sports enthusiast, Ewing participated in baseball, bowling and golf. He coached and sponsored many youth teams in the Stark County area, and he was instrumental in bringing the Canton Indians' minor league "AA" baseball team to Canton. In 1993 he was inducted into the Senior Olympics Hall of Fame and the Stark County Baseball Hall of Fame. Furthermore, Ewing donated the Stan and Dee Ewing Varsity Center in 1993 to Malone College in honor of Dee. A Master Mason, he was a member of the Ancient Accepted Order Scottish Rite, of Tadmor Temple, and the Canton Shrine Club. Other memberships include Brookside Country Club and Elks #68. On December 23, 1995, he married Grace Tate of Canton. Together they enjoyed movies, the Palace Theatre, the First Ladies Library, the Cultural Center for the Arts, and the Lehman Alumni Class of 1939. Additionally, Ewing enjoyed sharing his passion for the Cleveland Indians with Grace. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Dee. In addition to his parents and first wife, Ewing is preceded in death by his brother Richard K. Ewing; sister-in-law Gloria Boyd Ewing; niece Valerie Jean Ewing; and step grandson, Jacob Tate, along with other close relatives. Ewing is survived by his wife of 15 years, Grace and other survivors include his children David (Penni) Ewing; James (Patricia) Ewing; John (Katherine)Ewing; and Barbara (Donald) Cockroft, and grandchildren Amy Ewing, Christine Julia Ewing, Douglas and Margaret Ewing, and Kathryn, Daniel, and Julie Hanlon. Stepchildren Polly (Doug) Barr; Paul (Traci) Tate; James (Jan) Tate; Heather (Jeff) Fisher; and Thomas (Melanie) Tate; step- grandchildren Michael (Shelly) Barr and James Barr, Tiffany(Ryan) Lynch, Al and Tarrah Tate, Joshua, Jamie and Jonathon Tate, Jeremy, Alexander and Maxwell Fisher, and Taylor Tate, along with seven great step-grandchildren. Stan's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Asera Care Hospice and Gaslite Villa for their compassion and care for Stan during the final stages of his life. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home at 1517 Market Ave. North in Canton. After a private burial at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens, a memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Church of the Savior United Methodist, 120 Cleveland Ave. S.W. in Canton.
