Obituary

Sidney Savage 97, passed away Saturday evening in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Sid was born in Butler, Pa., raised in Akron, and lived in Canton and North Canton for 63 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rachel, his older brother Harold (Hershel), and his beloved, first wife of 28 years, L. Betty Silverman Savage. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Nancy Savage, who shared Sid's last 23 years. During World War II, Sid was a combat medic with the 145th Infantry of Ohio's 37th "Buckeye" Division in the South Pacific. Sid endured 592, continuous days of combat. No other U. S. Army division endured more continuous days of combat than the 37th Division and only one other division had more total days of combat. Sid was awarded four Bronze Stars over the next 70 years as the army continues to process World War II commendations. Upon his return to Akron after the service, the M. O'Neil company graciously saved Sid's prewar position for him as the department store's youngest buyer. Moving to Canton in 1953, Sid was employed at Livingston's furniture store and then spent more than 30 years as vice president of sales at the Akro Corporation, formerly the Buxbaum Company. Upon his retirement from Akro, Sid enjoyed a new life of community activities and charity commitments. He volunteered delivering "meals on wheels," served with SCORE and the local Retired Executives service organization, and he enjoyed participating in Aultman Woodlawn's stroke support group where his courage and kindness touched many lives. Sid was a lifetime member of the 37th Division Veterans Association. The high point of Sid's week was his Monday luncheons at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Club where he continued to make new friends and to inspire others with his constant good cheer and gentle humor. He also enjoyed his Thursday lunches with old friends and former community leaders at Beasley's in North Canton. Sid and Nancy took great pleasure enjoying the Canton Symphony and they were among the original members of the Palace Theater's film series. Sid always enjoyed his workouts and exercise at the Hall of Fame Fitness Center. Sid was honored to become a Lifetime Trustee of Temple Israel where he served two terms as president of the Temple Brotherhood ("Mens' Club"), two terms on the Temple Board of Trustees, and one term as Temple vice president. For his service to the Temple Brotherhood, Sid was honored by the Northeast Lakes Region of the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods. Sid is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his children Debra Savage (Larry) Hurtt of Massillon, and Douglas Savage and Lisa Gasper of Canton, and by his granddaughters Rebekah Hurtt (Frank) Silla of Massillon and Jennifer Hurtt (Shawn) Fimple of Louisville, and by four wonderful, great grandchildren, Franki, Nikolas, Gage, and Katelyn, and by his devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Nancy (David) Silverman Meckler of Akron. A memorial service will be held at Temple Israel on Tuesday, May 3, at 11a.m. with internment at Northlawn Cemetery, Cleveland Avenue North. In lieu of flowers, Sid's family requests that contributions may be made to the charity of your choice , or to the Canton Jewish Community Federation Food Bank, c/o Temple Israel, 432 30th Street NW, Canton 44709-3108.
