Shirley E. Smith , age 89, of Canton, passed peacefully in her bed in the early morning hours Tuesday, February 11, 2014. She was born on September 10, 1924 in Massillon to the late Albert and Thelma (Davis) Smith. Shirley was raised in the Canton Massillon area, it is here where she met and married the late Jack P. Smith to whom she was married 63 years. Shirley retired from Merrill Lynch after 25 years. She was active in the Lehman Alumni, member of ABWA, an avid bowler and a long time member at Westbrook Park United Methodist Church where she loved to volunteer. She was a loving, kind gentle and generous soul. Her light shined bright and long on this earth. To have known Shirley, you knew love and patience and wisdom. She will be missed by all. In addition to her parents and husband Shirley was preceded in death by a son; James Smith, daughter; Priscilla Smith and a sister; Jan Clifford. She is survived by her devoted daughter Melissa Price, who put her life on hold to ensure Shirley's final years were spent in the loving comforts of her home. 4 loving grandchildren; Jack (Shawnie) Cooper, Natalie Davis, Jessica Price, Traci (Kevin) Hall and 8 Great-grandchildren. Nieces: Becky Kline and Shelly Clifford. Nephew; Jeff Clifford. She was known to many children in the neighborhood on Abbott Place as, "Grandma" and as mom to Jerry Cindia. Her Kitty Hope-Hope also survives. A special thank you to Westbrook Park United Methodist Church especially Rev. John Mather for his weekly visits that she truly enjoyed. Funeral Service will be 6 p.m. Monday, in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave. NW with Rev. John Mather officiating. Interment will be private for the family.
