Obituary

The family of Shirley Willen Shorr is saddened to share the peaceful passing of their beloved mother and grandmother on the morning of September 21, 2022 at Cedar Village in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born in Canton, Ohio on October 16, 1926 to Ben and Lillian (Halpern) Willen.

Shirley spent most of her 95 years in Canton with her beloved husband, Joseph (Joe) Shorr. They were married 68 years and adored each other, truly modeling a truly great love story. Joe predeceased Shirley in 2014.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Susan Shorr and son-in-law, Dennis Mitman of Cincinnati, daughter, Carol Shorr Pomerantz of Walnut Creek, California; grandchildren Jill Pomerantz of Palm Desert, California, Brooke Pomerantz of Oakland, California, Amy Mitman and Andy Goloboy of Boston, MA and Todd and Samantha Mitman of Atlanta; great grandchildren Charlotte and Paige Goloboy and Lilly and Alexandra Mitman, younger sister, Elaine Singer of Cincinnati.

Shirley's older brother, Milton (Mickey) Willen sadly passed away earlier this year. Shirley was so very fortunate to spend the last few years of her life with her sister, Elaine and brother, Mickey at Cedar Village. Together they were an awesome trio- all strong in their personalities, opinions, and sense of humor…….together a force to be reckoned with. During her time in Cincinnati, Shirley was surrounded by her daughter Susan, son-in- law Denny, as well as Elaine's daughters and grandchildren.

Shirley was a Canton native and developed lifelong friendships there. She was an active member of the Jewish community and contributed her time and dedication to her synagogue, Shaaray Torah and the Canton Jewish Community Center. She and Joe dearly loved Canton and felt so very fortunate to live in a community where they could be so close to their own parents, siblings and dear friends and raise their family. Shirley was elated to be a grandmother and celebrate her granddaughters' achievements and share in their disappointments. They are left with an empty space in their hearts.

Shirley's family will miss her sparkling spirit, direct attitude, strong opinions, brutal honesty and her commitment to her family. They truly loved the person that she was.

Funeral services will be Sunday 11:00 AM at Canton Hebrew Cemetery with Rabbi David Komerofsky officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Shaaray Torah Synagogue.
