Sara Lee (Sally) Marchand, age 81, flew free from this world on May 8, 2013. Born in November 1925, she was the only child of Ray and Ruth (Outland) Hathaway. For most of her life, she lived in Ohio, moving to Los Osos, California in 1996 after marrying Harry Marchand, a former high school classmate. Sally's first husband, Stan Donze died in 1987 and Harry died in 2010. Sally was a librarian in Canton and North Canton, Ohio. Always interested in children's literature, she became an accomplished story teller and writer of children's stories. In later years she was highly sought after to present programs on an eclectic variety of topics, ranging from a program on the president's wives to the history of outhouses. Although not having children of her own, she was "adopted" by Pam Jackson about 50 years ago and after marrying Harry, was welcomed a step-mother by Mark and Eric Marchand. In addition to these "children" she will be missed by her many friends both in Los Osos and Ohio. The following poem will be read at Sally's service. "I am Free: Be not burdened with times of sorrow. I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full. I savored much. Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee. God wanted me now, He set me free." A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday in Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Robert Walther officiating.
