Sara "Sally"
Bartolet
August 7, 1924 – May 12, 2014
Sara "Sally" S. Bartolet of Canton, Ohio passed away on Monday, May 12th, 2014. She was born in Canton, Ohio on August 7th, 1924 and she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaretta McAbee Stolberg. Sally was preceded in death by her husband John in 2005. Sally is survived by her granddaughters Molly and Madeline Berrey of North Canton, Ohio and her precious cat Snookie. Other surviving relatives and special friends include: Sara Berrey of North Canton, Martin (Teresa)(daughters- Rachel and Lauren) of Wadsworth, Brian Berrey of North Canton, Nancy (Harold) Irwin of Magnolia, Sue (Bo) Hysong of Magnolia, Mary Beth (Jim) Klick of Perry Township, Mike Cooper of Avon Lake, Ann Borst of Lake in the Hills, IL, Mary Lou (Jay) Robson of Jackson Township, Janet and Merrill Mossbarger of Jackson Township, Rosemarie Schriner and many other cousins and friends. Sally attended Woodland and Gibbs grade schools before attending Canton McKinley High School. At McKinley, she was a member of the National Honor Society and she took college preparation courses along with shorthand and typing. After high school graduation in 1942, she became a permanent member of the McKinley Class of 1942 reunion committee and for most class events; she was either the chairman or co-chairman of the event. Sally started to work at the George D. Harter bank upon graduation from high school where she started as the first utility girl. She first learned the switchboard and then she moved into the Central Information File Department. From there she moved on into the trust department, bond department, bookkeeping, safe deposit, mortgage loan and installment loan department and then into payroll. Sally then became secretary to the president of the Bank, moved on to be assistant secretary of the corporation (1956), assistant cashier (1959), and then became comptroller of the bank in 1961. As comptroller, it was her responsibility to see that the main office and all of the bank branches were in balance every day, prepare all financial reports, write commercial letters of credit when requested by a customer, order foreign currency for customers traveling abroad, transfer funds among the correspondent banks and see that the reserve position with the Federal reserve was maintained each day. In the spring of 1984, the Harter Bank became part of the Society Bank family and Sally was named to be a Vice president and comptroller of Society Bank of Northeastern Ohio. Sally saw the bank grow from a $62 million bank with two branches to a $7 Billion dollar bank with 23 branches when she retired in 1984 after forty two years. Sally also embraced the technological changes that occurred in the banking industry where all of the records were initially done by hand to the records becoming computerized. Sally remained to be very savvy with computer technology throughout her life and she would continue to get very upset when something would prevent her home laptop or desktop computer from working properly. Sally was also involved in many local organizations including the Canton Women's Club (president and chairman of the board in 1991, 1992, and 1993); Town Garden Club (president in 1999); Quota International of Canton (president in 1987 and 1988); Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Chapter #539, Order of the Eastern Star (worthy matron in 1961); Emerald Court #33,Order of the Amaranth (worthy matron in 1949, 1990, 1994 and was grand royal matron of the state of Ohio in 1988-89); McKinley Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem (worthy high priestess in 1958-59); Shriner's Ladies Club; Ladies of the Canton Elks; the McKinley Museum auxiliary, and the Harter Bank retirees group. When Sally was younger, she was an avid golfer and bowler who enjoyed being in various Harter Bank leagues. Sally and her husband John were also world travelers with her favorite place in the world being the Hawaiian Islands. Sally also enjoyed getting together with her many friends and she especially LOVED to play bridge as she was a member of several bridge clubs. Sally was an active member of the Church of the Savior United Methodist (which just became part of Crossroads United Methodist Church) for her entire life. As a youth, she was involved in the youth choir and Epworth league and as an adult; she served on various committees including being secretary- treasurer of the Board of Trustees. Sally also was a volunteer treasurer of the church for many years. One of the highlights of her life was when she took the Emmaus Walk #76 in 2011. A memorial service will take place at Crossroads United Methodist Church (Church of the Savior United Methodist) on Saturday, May 24th, 2014 at 10:00am with Rev. Edward Fashbaugh, II as the celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crossroads United Methodist Church Emmaus Scholarship Fund or the Canton Women's Club.
