Samuel D. Gordon, Bonita Springs, FL, formerly of Canton, OH
Samuel Donald Gordon, 97, a resident of Bonita Springs, FL, and former longtime resident of Canton, OH, died in Bonita Springs on January 26, 2022, of a heart attack.
Sam was born March 27, 1924, in Akron, OH, the son of Joseph and Anna Gordon. He graduated from Firestone High School in Akron and attended Ohio State University and Kent State University, where he studied law. During World War II he served in Patton's Third Army in Europe and helped to liberate Buchenwald concentration camp.
In 1948 he married Dorothy Hoicowitz of Canton, where they resided for four decades and raised their two daughters. Sam worked in Akron with his father and his brother in the garment industry—first at a haberdashery that bore the Gordon name (a store where a young Clark Gable was briefly employed as a clerk), and subsequently at their manufacturing company Gordon Industrial Uniforms. Dorothy passed away in 1989. Sam remarried in 1996; his second wife, Frances Fields, died in 2012. He was also predeceased by his daughter Amy Gordon Post; his brother, Earl Gordon; and his sister, Cindy Golub.
Sam's exuberance for life, his stylish wardrobe, and the many fun times he had with his family and large circle of friends will be cherished by his daughter Rebecca Paller Deyle and her husband John Deyle of Mt. Kisco, NY; his sister-in-law, Marylin Levin, of Canton, OH; his son-in-law, Ben Z. Post (Debbie), of Naples, FL, and his four grandchildren: Oleg Deyle (Natasha) of Nashville, TN, Erica Post Rabb (Dana) of San Francisco, CA, Jay Post (Nicole) of Plano, TX, and Brian Post (Heather) of Dallas, TX; six great-grandchildren: Alec Rabb, Zach Post, Megan Rabb, Andrew Post, Cara Post, and Jared Post, and several nieces and nephews.
A private service for his family will be held at North Lawn Cemetery in Canton, OH, on February 3. Sam was a member of Temple Israel. In accordance with Jewish tradition, the family requests that no flowers be sent and that any contributions in Sam's memory be directed to the charity of your choice or to the Amy Post Fund for Brain Tumor Research, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, P.O. Box 931517, Cleveland, OH 44193-1655.
