Obituary

Robert H. Waldorf, age 90, of Canton, aka "Mr. Wonderful" and "The Great One", passed away Wednesday afternoon in "his chair" at his residence. His wife, Ruth (Watts) Waldorf, precedes him in death in 2003. Born to Merle and Della (Moore) Waldorf in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, his mother was widowed at a young age. She remarried Harold E Goe, a stepfather he loved, and they moved to Canton, where Robert graduated from McKinley High School. He married Ruth on the 1-yr anniversary of Pearl Harbor. WW II interrupted his college and family plans. Bob served in the Navy as a CPO Pharmacists mate in the South Pacific. He claimed to be the checker champion of Easter Island, and took the Seabees' money at his crap games. After the war, he completed his BS in Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University and began working for Art New at Woodland Drug Co. in Canton. Attacked by polio as a young man, but seemingly unfazed, he purchased the drug store from Art, and served his customers and the community until his disability retirement at age 60. Bob was recognized for his work with United Way and as the long-standing Executive Secretary of the Stark County Pharmaceutical Association. Robert was a member of the William McKinley Lodge 431 F&AM. His drug store was a gathering spot for pharmaceutical representatives, with the coffeepot always on, and a nickel fountain coke yours for the asking. Every 4th of July during his retirement years with Ruth, family and friends would gather at their house for the "party.' She was his legs, and Bob was the party ringleader. Steaks, beer, German potato salad, hot dogs, splashing in the pool and screaming kids were the order of the day. But, you always had to leave on time. Robert is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: James and Miriam Waldorf of Dallas, TX; Granddaughter and spouse, Debra and Mark Fox of Vineland, NJ; and two great-grandchildren Lillian and Avram Fox. The surviving family expresses their profound gratitude to Sue and Denny Myers, and their children, for their kindness and attention to Bob throughout his retirement years. You brought great joy to Bob, and extra peace of mind to our family. A Masonic service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 1 pm at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton, followed by calling hours until 3 pm. Leave on time! Inurnment will be held in Forest Hill Cemetery at 2 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
