Obituary

Dr. Richard E. Werstler passed away on January 2, 2015. He was born near Canton, Ohio in 1927 - the son of H. Howard and Dessie Werstler. He graduated from Hartville High School, received his Bachelors at Wittenberg University, was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and finished his post-graduate work at University of Northern Dakota and Case Western Reserve. During his 44 year career educating our youth and teachers Dr. Werstler served the Northwestern School District of Clark County, Lakewood Ohio Schools, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools, the School of Education at Central Michigan University and on the board of directors at Carthage College. For over 20 years of his career Dr. Werstler served as Chairman of the Professional Division of Teacher Education at Adrian College. In 1985 Dr. Werstler returned to Stark County to serve as the Executive Director of The McKinley Museum of History, Science & Industry and the McKinley National Memorial where he oversaw the restoration of the monument, construction of the Discover World exhibit and completion of the Street of Shops. In service to community Dr. Werstler participated in various capacities on the Wolverine Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis International, the Michigan State Board of Education, the Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Michigan, the Graduate Deans of Michigan Colleges & Universities and the State Department of Education in Ohio. He was also a founder of Lenco Credit Union in Adrian, Michigan. Dr. Werstler was honored to work on the development of Lake Township Historical Society as president and charter member working on the restoration of the one-room schoolhouse adjacent to Lake Local. He was a member of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church and his long time involvement and faith was a big part of his life. During his lifetime Dr. Werstler built, restored, or enhanced over 20 houses, and two large farms. Dr. Werstler is survived by his wife of 65 years - Wilma, sister Rachel (Smith), daughter Beth (Santell) and sons Jeffrey and Mark. He has six grandchildren Megan (Brandan), Stephen (Kelly), Erik, Alex, Rebecca and Jacob and two great grandchildren Landon and Tori. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorene (Wymer), brother Loren, son in law Sam (Santell) and granddaughter Rachael. Visitation will be held between 3 and 7 on Friday afternoon, January 9th, services on Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 am (calling hour at 10:00) all scheduled at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, 1460 State St., NE, North Canton, Ohio with Pastor Leah Schafer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Jacobs cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers please make a memorial contribution to the scholarship fund for Richard & Wilma Werstler at Adrian College or the music fund at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church.
