Obituary

Richard G. Tillett, age 84, lovingly known as Pop to his family, passed into the arms of the Lord on December 4, 2008 surrounded by his devoted family. He was born April 13, 1924 in the city of Canton. He is survived by his faithful wife of 61 years, Barbara. Dick is a Lehman Alumnus and went on to serve his country honorably as a United States Marine in World War II. Following his tour of duty, Dick worked at Stark Ceramics Inc., where he retired after 40 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, where he took pleasure in helping to maintain the grounds. Dick was an avid golfer whose accomplishments included winning the Stark County Amateur Golf Association championship three times and club championships at both Tam O' Shanter and Shady Hollow County Club. Together, Dick and his father became ADGA champions in 1951 - and Dick was the 1957 Ohio State Public Links Runner-Up at Elms Country Club. Dick was preceded in death by parents George and Esther Tillett and a brother Raymond. Dick is survived by wife Barbara; brother-in-law Jack (Lea) Stewart; proud children Tom (Carolyn) Tillett and Kathryne A. Smith; grandchildren Heather (Jerry) Bauders, Cory Smith (Rachelle), Christopher Tillett (Allison), Taylor Smith and Julie Tillett (Scott); great-granddaughters Ashley, Kaleigh, Rylee, Kensington and Madison; and furry friends Hadlee and Chloee. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews with a special thanks to Fred and Beth Blosser for their love. Special thanks go to our dear friend Carol Pegg. The family will greet friends and loved ones Sunday, Dec. 7 from 2-4 p.m. at First Baptist Church. A memorial service will immediately follow. Officiating will be Reverend Kevin Slyh, whose spiritual guidance has been greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church 4110 38th St., N.W. Canton, OH 44718 or the First Tee of Canton 2525 25th St., N.E. Canton, OH 44705. Dick contributed to the lives and happiness of others in so many ways with his sense of humor. He will be cherished in our hearts forever. The Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
