Obituary

Richard E. Schario, age 89, of North Canton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday April 26, 2017 at Sunrise of Gahanna where he received wonderful care following breaking his hip. He was born in Canton on July 31, 1927 to Leo and Clara (Haiber) Schario. His father died when he was 2 years old and his mother raised her 5 children and never remarried. He graduated from Timken High School and Chicago School of Interior Design. Richard served in the Navy during WW II and was called back to serve during the Korean War. Additionally, he was past Commander and Chaplain of VFW #9795 in Canal Fulton. He married Verla Rohr on November 15, 1958 at Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church in Canal Fulton and they were blessed with 3 children. They were members of St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton. He had numerous jobs including The Sleep Shop, Kobacher's, Higbees, Chetons, and High Point, and owner of The Drapery Design Center, his most recent was with Chick- fil-A in North Canton and he was still working there when he was 88 years old. Dick loved BINGO and was known around town as the Candy Man because he handed out Chick-fil-A mints everywhere he went. He was committed to honoring veterans and their service and participated in many military funerals as Post Commander and Chaplain.

Preceded in death by his wife Verla on October 27, 2005; and siblings Bernard (Kathleen), Dolores Wright and Mary (Bill) Brechtel. He is survived by children Karen and Jerry Frengou of Gahanna, Lieutenant Colonel(Ret) Mark and Sandi Schario of Cleveland, Kristen Schario of Beavercreek; grandchildren Alex and Brian Frengou, First Lieutenant Kyle and First Lieutenant Casey Schario and Elizabeth and Sydney White; brother Robert (Carol) Schario; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Sunday 2-6 PM at Arnold Funeral Home Canton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday 10 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton with Rev. Msg. James A. Clarke celebrant. Final resting place is Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW #9795, 257 N. Canal St., Canal Fulton, OH 44614 and to The Alzheimer's Association.
