Richard Gordon Rosenfield, age 84, passed away Thursday November 6, 2014. He was born and raised in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Samuel and Mildred (Harris) Rosenfield on October 25, 1930. Richard attended New York University in New York City and earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master's Degrees in Microbiology from the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, New York. Following service in the US Army at Fort Detrick, Maryland, he pursued his graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University in State College Pennsylvania. He began his research career at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. He then worked for Dr. Robert Guthrie, renowned developer of the PKU test for amino acid abnormalities in newborns at the University of Buffalo. Richard helped develop the PKU test for national market. From there, he went to the Ames Division of Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, Indiana as a researcher in the Department of Research & Development. Upon relocating in Canton, Ohio, he worked as a Chemist in the Quality Assurance department at Sugardale Foods Division of Fresh Mark, Inc. working in various departments and retiring as Senior Food Technician in the Department of Research and Development. Richard served as an advisor to Junior Achievement and acted as judge in several local school science projects. He was a member of Sigma Xi, scientific society, Institute of Food Technologists and the Association for Quality Assurance. A member of Temple Israel, he volunteered at Pegasus Farms, The Naples, Florida Equestrian Center, Mercy Medical Center, Westbrook Park Meals on Wheels, Jewish Family Services Meals on Wheels, The Inn at Belden Village and in the office at Temple Israel. An avid gardener, photographer and hobbyist, he cultivated plants from seed and lovingly tended his cactus garden and other exotic plants. He built model sailing ships and doll houses for his granddaughters gracing the homes of his family with his fine craftsmanship. An interest in Native American culture, led him to create many unique sand paintings. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; granddaughter Allison Jill Rosenfield; and his sister Linda Rosenfield. He is survived by a son David (Nancy) Rosenfield of Short Hills, New Jersey; daughters Jane (Derrick) Black of Charlotte, North Carolina and Anne (Michael) Port of Solon, Ohio; grandchildren Lauren and Daniel Rosenfield, Brian, Samantha and Jordan Black, and Alex, Jessica and Steven Port; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bud and Mimi Frankel of Chicago, Illinois. Honoring his wishes, Richard will be cremated. Memorial services will be held at Temple Israel, 432-30th St., NW, Canton, Ohio 44709 on Sunday November 9th at 1:00 PM with Rabbi Jon Adland officiating. In lieu of flowers, Richard requested donations in his memory be made to Temple Israel, Foundation for Juvenile Diabetes, 513 West Mt.
