Obituary

Richard Eugene Miller, age 82, of Hartville, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012. He was born on Marcy 24, 1930 to the late Walter and Mabel Miller of Elida (near Lima) Ohio. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Luella, who passed in 2006. Richard graduated from Elida High School in June of 1948 and held several jobs at Westinghouse and Lima Baldwin Hamilton Locomotive, Inc. before enlisting in the US Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician in December 1950, right after the start of the Korean War. After mastering the new (at that time) technology of radar and rising to Second Class Petty Officer, he received an honorable discharge in 1954. He was recruited by Goodyear Aerospace Laboratories in Akron, Ohio, a company which was rapidly recruiting aircraft radar mechanics for their development of long-flight duration military airships. Upon moving back to Ohio in 1955 he met and fell in love with Luella Bonsky, owner/operator of the LuBon Hair Salon in Hartville, Ohio. They were married July 5, 1959 and settled in Hartville for the rest of their lives along with their revered golden retrievers Shelley and Prince. In 1985 Goodyear sold their Aerospace Labs to Loral, and Richard retired from Loral, Inc. in 1989, after 34 years of loyal and dedicated service. In 1991 he went to work for W.L. Jenkins Bell Company as Lead Inventor/Engineer, before retiring again in 2001 to care for Luella. Richard started getting involved with Stark Central Little League Baseball in 1956, and served as President of the organization from 1961-1975. As practice pitcher for Hartville's Monarch Rubber Team, he helped the young athletes improve their hitting percentages tremendously and watched his team win seven league championships in a row from 1967-1973. He continued to support the local community he loved so much throughout the rest of his life. He was a diehard Browns and Indians fan who never stopped believing each year could be their year. Richard is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Rita and Tom Bitler of Lima, Ohio along with their sons Mike, Randy and David. A niece, Cathy DeVand, two great-nephews and three great-nieces. And very special friend and neighbor Carl Race. Funeral services for family and friends will be conducted on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at 6:00 pm in the Arnold Funeral Home, 504 W. Maple St., Hartville, Ohio with Pastor Phil Hoverstock officiating. Calling hours will be held prior to the services from 3-6:00 pm in the funeral Home.
