Richard Lee Gill, age 75, of Uniontown, passed away on Thursday January 3, 2019. He was born in Canton, Ohio on August 4, 1943 to the late Charles and Nora Gill and graduated from Lake High School in 1961. After graduating, he went and enlisted in the US Navy where he served until 1964 and was honorably discharged. Richard became a police officer with the Akron Police Department in 1967, where he was shot in the abdomen by an armed robber on January 31, 1969. After a long medical battle and undergoing numerous surgeries for his gunshot wound, he once again returned to work as a police officer with the Akron Police Department. In 1977, due to his injury, he was forced to take a Disability Retirement from the force. Following his Akron Police Department retirement, he attended the University of Akron where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and became a Parole Officer in the Stark County Adult Probation Department working for three years. He then worked as a Parole Officer for the State of Ohio Adult Parole Authority from 1990 until 2005 and once again retired. Richard worked as a delivery driver for NAPA Auto Parts in Hartville and loved the Lord.
Preceded in death by his wife of 33 years Barbara; brothers Robert and Donald; and sister Virginia. He leaves behind his three children Michelle Imobersteg, Tina (David) Wodzisz and Richard Gill; 9 grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
Calling hours are Tuesday 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM and the funeral services are Tuesday 1:00 PM conducted by Pastor Keith all scheduled at Home Missionary Baptist Church, 1922 Oakes Dr., Akron, OH 44312. Final resting place is Mount Peace Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
