Obituary

Phillip Anthony Zampino, Sr., age 64, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012, after a long battle with various health issues. He was born October 15, 1947 and was a lifetime resident of Canton, Ohio. Phillip graduated from Timken Vocational High School in 1965 and volunteered to serve 3 years in the military from 1965 to 1968. Phillip graduated from the Armed Forces School of Music in 1966 and served in the 1st U.S. Army Headquarters Band until honorably discharged as a Specialist (Sergeant) E-5 in 1968. In 1968, Phil founded Zampino's Drum Shop/Zampino's School of Music, PAZ Publishing, PAZ Percussion, and Drummer's Distribution. Phil was a member of the NALC, Local 238, the Timken Alumni Association, the Plain Local Schools Alumni Association, North Canton Elks (BPOE) Lodge 2029, the North Canton Knights of Columbus Council, American Legion, and the Sons of Italy. He was a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Counselor for many years. Phil also coached YBA Basketball at the North Canton YMCA, Plain Local Midget Football League, and the Holly Hills Baseball Programs. He was a volunteer for the Italian-American Festival. A two-time cancer survivor, Phil was a volunteer for the Canton Area American Cancer Society, and in 2004, he founded C-PAG, Inc. (Cancer Patients Advocacy Group), a Cancer Support Group. He was on the advisory board and served as an executive officer of the Canton Bluecoats Drum Corps Organization. Phil has been a music educator since 1961. He authored 26 educational music books. He was a strong advocate for "Character Counts in Stark County" and has implemented this into his teaching. Phil served on the advisory COE boards in Jackson, North Canton, and Plain Local Schools. He has been a volunteer in the Plain Local Schools since 1975. Phil is the Founder and Past President of P.L.I.M.P.A. (The Plain Local Instrumental Music Patrons Association) and the Amore Jazz Festival. He was a committee member for the Arts in Plain Program, President's Committee, Long Range Planning, and was a member of the Plain Community Task Force and served on the Strategic Planning Community Perception Committee in the Plain Local School District. Phil was elected from 1989-2002 to the Plain Local School Board. Preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Helen (Perretta) Zampino and his sister, Carol (Zampino) Esway, Phil is survived by his four children, Phillip Zampino, Jr., Deana (Chris) Stafford, Anjanette (Chris) Zampino, and Michael (Ana) Zampino; his eight grandchildren, Ellie, Abbey, Harmony, Nakoa, Emalee, Phillip III, Joshua, and Leilani; his brother, Benjamin (Ann) Zampino; and his sister, Anita (Ed) Elliott. He is also survived by ten godchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former students. Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 2-6 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 710 Tuscarawas Street W. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:15 a.m. in St. Anthony's All Saints Parish on Monday, January 30, 2012. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it was Phil's request that memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Patient Advocacy Group (C-PAG, Inc.), 2415 Bevington St. N.W. Canton, Ohio 44709.
