Obituary

Philip Miller, age 90, a decorated World War II Veteran, was a Canton native and longtime resident. He served as a tank commander in Patton's Fourth Armored Division, landed at Utah Beach in Normandy during the D-Day, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism and, after being wounded in battle, he received a Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. When he returned after serving four years in the army, he started a business selling merchandise to stores in small towns throughout Ohio. Eventually, the business grew into catalogue showrooms, Miller Sales, in Canton and a second store in Massillon. It became a tradition to shop at Miller Sales, where many customers became friends of Phil's as well. He was born on September 6, 1915 to the late Ike and Rose Miller and in 1933 Phil graduated from McKinley High School where he was a tennis standout who reached the state finals in Columbus in his senior year. He went on to win numerous tennis championships at Arrowhead Country Club where he was a member for many years. His wife of fifty-four years, Sally Berkman also of Canton, preceded him in death, as well as siblings, Sam, Louis and Dave Miller, and Esther Stierman. His daughter Marsha and son-in-law Richard live in Potomac, Maryland, and his daughter Carole and son-in-law Nelson in Columbus. Phil was the grandfather of Betsy and Andy (Lori) Schuman and Lindsay, Ben (Alyssa), and Tracy Genshaft and four great grandchildren: Eliza Jayne, Joey Miller, and Abigail Rose Schuman and Sophie Anne Genshaft. He also leaves his devoted caregiver of the last seven years, Nancy Minock. Phil was a thirty-second degree Mason, was honored by the City of Hope, and was inducted into the Canton JCC Sports Hall of Fame. He supported many local and national charities and was a member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and the Canton Jewish War Veterans. A Masonic Service and the Funeral Service officiated by Rabbi John Spitzer and Cantor Bruce Braun will be Wednesday 11:00 AM in the Arnold Funeral Home. Final resting place is Canton Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Wexner Heritage Village, 1151 College Avenue, Columbus, OH, 43209. Shiva will be observed Wednesday at the residence 4:00 PM on.
