Penny (Penelope) K. Sunderland, 71, passed away on Monday August 22, 2022 after a long battle with diabetes. Penny was born on June 12, 1951 to David and Hazel Crooks in Lyndhurst, Ohio. After graduating from Brush High School in 1969, she studied briefly at Kent State University, but left after the shootings in 1970 to pursue other goals. In 1971 she married her high school sweetheart, Gary Sunderland. They had 3 children, Matt (1973), Andy (1975), and Julie (1980). She was a devoted and loving wife and mother, who instilled a love of reading,  creativity, and adventure in her children. She was also an adoring pet mom whose dogs were always an integral part of the family. She returned to college in 1999 and graduated with an associate degree from Stark State, leading to a career as a medical assistant. Throughout her life she embraced many hobbies and passions including swimming, quilting, ceramics, stained glass art, and tai-chi.

Penny is survived by her husband Gary Sunderland; her 3 children Matthew and his wife, Carrie Sunderland; Andrew and his wife, Jennifer Sunderland; Julie Sunderland and her partner, Juan Romero; and her 2 grandchildren, Eliana Romero (Julie) and Olive Sunderland (Andrew).

Cremation has taken place and there are no scheduled services. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
