Paul W. Hartung Jr., 84, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012, in the comfort of his Jackson Township residence surrounded by family and friends. Paul was a Canton native, born August 12, 1927. His parents were Paul W. Hartung Sr. and Leona (Hilty) Hartung. He graduated from Lehman in 1945, where he excelled as a two way end on the football team and was a state qualifier his Junior and Senior years with the golf team. Upon graduation, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. After his service, he attended Kent State for one semester before transferring to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. There he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Episilon fraternity. In 1951, Paul joined the Belden Brick Company. He was the third generation of Hartungs to work there following his grandfather L.B. and father Paul Sr. footsteps. He spent his entire 42 year professional career there retiring as Vice President 1993. He served on the Board until failing health led to his stepping down in 2009. P.W., as his friends called him, was an avid golfer, played tennis and was a great fan of the Big Band era. A talented drummer, he was a regular at Meyer's Lake Moonlight Ballroom in its Big Band heyday. He was a talented story teller and a proud Cleveland Browns fan often recalling watching the Browns beating Baltimore 27-0 in the 1964 championship game on his black and white TV. Paul served on various boards and fund raisers over the years including the Philomatheon Society and the Canton Preservation Society. He was a member of Brookside Country Club and Church of the Covenant. Paul and Nancy had a winter home near Pinehurst, North Carolina, in Seven Lakes Country Club in West End. He was a member of The Chapel in the Pines. He was preceded in death by his son Grant (6/18/98) and his wife of 59 years Nancy (6/20/10). Also his sister, Marnie Mitchell of Lima, Ohio. Paul is survived by daughter Barbara Smith and her husband Tom of Bristol, VA, son P.W. "Wick" Hartung, III of Canton and son Tom Hartung and his wife Leane of Laguna Niguel, CA, and daughter in law Beth Hartung of Steamboat Springs, CO. Ten grandchildren include Elizabeth Smith and Emily Smith Mangus, Linsey Hartung Knueven, Lauren Hartung, twins Taylor and Spencer Hartung, Matthew Hartung, Tyler G. Hartung and Tyler L and MacKenzie Hartung. His first great grandchild was born just two weeks ago. Also surviving are sister Beverly Deuble and brother David Hartung and wife Polly. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be Friday,11:00 a.m. August 3, 2012 in John Knox Presbyterian Church, 5155 Eastlake St. NW, North Canton. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Canton Preservation Society, 131 Wertz Ave, Canton, Ohio 44708, to support the Hartung House which was his grandparent's home now serving as the Canton Preservation Society offices.
