Paul W. Bair Jr., 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2014 at his home, surrounded by family, after a year-long, courageous battle with ALS. He leaves his wife of 19 years, Darleen (Peterson) Bair; three sons, Paul III (wife Donna), Preston, and Payne (wife Mary); daughter-in-law Amie Hyust; seven grandchildren, Steven, Emily, Preston Jr., Peyton, Christopher, Brian, and Mitchell; his "adopted" family, the Hillens; many family members and close friends; as well as his furry buddies, Rocky and Little Orphan Annie. Paul Jr. was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Ann (Arnold) Bair of 35 years. Born in Suffield, OH, the son of Paul W. Bair Sr. and Buena Vista Bair, he was a lifelong resident of Canton. He graduated from Timken Vocational High School in 1954. Following service in the U.S. Marine Corps (1954-1956), Paul worked in security for Timken Roller Bearing Company before joining the Canton Police Department as a Patrolman in 1963. He held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. He helped form the City's first SWAT team and was responsible for the Police Training Academy. Paul holds an Associate Degree from Kent State University and graduated from the Traffic Institute at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL, in 1977. In 1992, he resigned from the Police Department to accept the position of Safety Director for the City of Canton. He retired, following 39 years of service to the City, in 2002. Paul was a recipient of the Knights of Columbus' Blue Coat Award in 1984. Paul and Darleen attend First Church of the Resurrection. He was an avid antique collector and enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. He shared his passion with many friends and family members along the way. He thoroughly enjoyed selling his "choice merchandise" at the Hartville Flea Market. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers at the Little Flower Family Practice, VA Medical Center, Crossroads Hospice, and FirstLight Home Care. Calling hours will be held on Thursday January 1, 2015 2-5:00 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Avenue North in Canton and on Friday one hour prior to the service 10-11:00 a.m. at the church. A Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) service will begin Thursday at 1:45p.m. Funeral Services will be Friday 11:00 a.m. January 2, in First Church of the Resurrection, 901 Tuscarawas St E, Canton, Ohio with Rev. Dr. Bruce Mont officiating. Interment in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association - Northern Ohio Chapter, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, or Crossroads Hospice in Green, OH.
