Obituary

Norman H. Peterson age 92 of Canton, passed away Thursday evening, January 10, 2013, He was born September 29, 1920 in Batavia, Illinois to Harry and Hannah (Wennersten) Peterson. He graduated from Batavia High School and was a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1943 with a B.S Degree in Business Administration. College memberships included Sigma Pi, Gamma Theta Phi and Sigma Delta Chi. In World War II, he served in the European Theatre of Operations with the Finance Department. In 1946, he joined The Timken Company as the Assistant Editor of the company's employee magazine and later served as Advertising Manager, Assistant to the President, Vice President of Corporate Services and retired in 1983. He also attended the McKinley School of Law. Norman was a member of many local civic organizations as well as state and national business groups. He served as President of The Canton Club and was a Trustee on the Board of the Avondale Homeowners Association for over 40 years and a past president. As a result of his efforts, he argued the case for Canton's selection when it was named an All-American City after he made a presentation before a Jury organized by Look Magazine and the National Municipal League. Present memberships include Glenmoor Country Club and The Pine Lake Trout Club where he was awarded numerous fisherman of the month citations. He authored two books: 10,000 Swedes Ran Through the Weeds, Chased by One Norwegian and How One Young Swede Helped Defeat the Krauts in WWII. As a founding member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the first planning meeting was held in his home early in 1954, and he later served on the Vestry. Previously, he had served on the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife Judith Humphrey Peterson whom he married in 2008; one son Woody Peterson of Washington, DC; two daughters Kristina (Richard Lynch) Peterson of Brooklyn, New York and Anne Linnae; three grandsons Dr. Eric (Amy) Peterson of Seattle, Washington, Hugh (Peta Hellard) Peterson of Hollywood, California, and Gavin Lynch of Brooklyn, New York; three children (on Judith's side) Megan Humphrey Conley of Canton, Elizabeth Conley of Kent, Ohio and Michael Alan (Maria) Bailey of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren (on Judith's side) Olivia Blyth, Benjamin, Elliott and Sullivan; sister-in-law (on Rhea's side) Rosie (Robert) Piggott of Raleigh, North Carolina, God-child Nancy Myers- her children Justin, Maggie, and Chad (Christie)- their 2 boys Zachary and Travis, all of Sumter, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. In addition survivors include two long-time friends David E. Olson of Wheaton, Illinois, from college days, and Carl Harleen of San Rafael, California boyhood friend since the early 1020's. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rhea, to whom he had been married 52 years; brothers Harry Norman, Arthur (Betty); and sisters Edith (Harold) Carlstedt and Lilly (Walter) Hankes. A memorial service will be Friday, January 18, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Fr. Dustin Berg officiating. His cremains shall be placed in the St. Mark's Columbarium.
