IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Naomi Ginsburg
Freedman
November 6, 1916 – August 28, 2009
Naomi Ginsburg Freedman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away on August 29 in Canton, Ohio at age 92. Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to Laura and Max Ginsburg on November 6, 1916, Naomi was known for her commitment to family, her volunteer service, and her lifelong learning. Naomi's father died in a train accident in the early 1920s. In 1930, her mother married Benjamin Sigel. Naomi graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1933. Her family moved to Canton a year later in 1934. Naomi worked for her brother Harry Ginsburg, a local accountant and attorney. For a short period of time, she managed a dress shop in Evansville, Indiana, but then returned to Canton. During World War II, she was a USO volunteer. After the war, she worked with the Canton Committee for Overseas Survivors. In 1948, she married Arthur Freedman, her husband for 60 years. Naomi was always very active in the Canton Jewish community. She volunteered in many capacities at Temple Israel, and served as Librarian for more than 30 years. The Naomi Freedman Book Circle was named in her honor. She was also a member and chair of the volunteer choir. The Jewish Community Center and Canton Chapter of Hadassah (Jewish National Fund for more than 60 years) were also organizations that she served. Through 2008, Naomi volunteered at the North Branch of the Stark County District Library. She was an accomplished bridge and tennis player, and enjoyed both well into her 80s. She also loved music and was a choral member of the Canton Civic Opera during the 1950s and 1960s. After Art retired, he and Naomi spent winters in Pompano Beach, Florida. While there, they volunteered at the local library. The couple also traveled to see their children in Colorado and Texas. Naomi is survived by her son David (Lorie Millenson) of Denver, daughter Mindy (David) Klein of Houston, two granddaughters Julia and Laura Klein, many nieces and nephews, and many other friends and family members. She was preceded in death by husband Arthur H. Freedman and brothers Harry and Hymie Ginsburg. We remember her as a kind, loving, and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, 333 25th Street N.W., on Monday, August 31 at 10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Leah Herz and Rabbi John Spitzer officiating. Interment will take place at North Lawn Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel or to Stark County District Library.
