Obituary

Nancy Jane Black Hartung, age 80, of Canton,OH, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010. Born September 12, 1929 to Mary Jane and Ted Black. Other than a brief move to Warren, PA, Nancy spent her life in Canton. Graduated Lehman High School in 1947 where she was head majorette. Nancy attended Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista, Virginia, where she was elected to the May Court. She then attended the University of Toledo where she was a member of Tri Delt sorority. Nancy spent her early summers at her parent's 160 acre farm in Millersburg, Ohio, known as Sky View Acres, where she enjoyed horse back riding. She married Paul W. Hartung Jr. at Calvary Presbyterian Church on January 20, 1951. Nancy was active in many community activities including serving as Canton Junior League President for two years in 1966 and 1967. She was an active member of Brookside Country Club and enjoyed tennis, bridge and was an avid reader and loved watching the NFL and golf. Upon becoming an empty nester, she spent a decade working at Easterday's Gifts, especially enjoying decorating a dozen Christmas trees per season. Since 1977, Nancy and Paul, wintered in their home in Seven Lakes, North Carolina where they were seasonal attendees at their beloved Chapel in the Pines. Preceded in death by brother Ted Black Jr. and son Grant (1998). Survived by, daughter Barbara Hartung Smith and husband Tom Smith of Bristol, VA. Son P.W. "Wick" Hartung III of Canton, OH, daughter-in-law Beth Hartung of Steamboat Springs, CO. and son Tom and wife Leanne Hartung of Laguna Niguel, CA. The light of Nancy's life were her ten grandchildren Elizabeth and Emily; Linsey, Lauren, Spencer and Taylor; Matthew and Tyler G; and Tyler L and Mackenzie. A memorial service will Thursday, June 24th 3:00 P.M. at the Church of the Covenant with Dr. William Watt officiating. A private interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
