Obituary

Merritt C. Wolfe, 89, of Canton and Bonita Springs, FL, passed away Tuesday March 31, 2009. He was born April 14, 1919 in Marietta, Ohio to the late William Donald and Julia (Crothers) Wolfe who had resided in Cuyahoga Falls. Mr. Wolfe was the former President/owner of Canton Floors Inc. for 36 years. During part of those 36 years, he was the President/owner of Commercial Interiors of Youngstown, and Managing Partner of The Fulton Co. He was a member and former trustee of the Church of the Savior United Methodist Church of Canton. He was a graduate of Kent State University and the Army's Command and General Staff School. After graduation from Kent he was an Industrial Engineer for B.F. Goodrich. In 1941 he joined the US Army Air Corps as a Fighter Pilot in the European and Mediterranean theaters. While serving in WW II he was a combat fighter pilot with the 31st Fighter Group (308th Sqdn.) and flew 109 combat fighter missions out of England, Gibraltar, North Africa, Malta, and Sicily and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, The Malta George Cross 50th Anniversary Medal, and The Purple Heart. In semi-retirement he had been associated with the Stark Development Board and the Better Business Bureau. He was a past President (1972-1973) and three term director of the Canton Rotary Club, and was a member since 1962. He was a longtime trustee and past president of the Avondale Homeowners Association, former board member and officer of the Wood Flooring Institution of America, a former board member of the Construction Council of Stark County, and former president and director of the Casa Bonita I Condo Association. Preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Ann Wolfe, in November 2008; and sister Rosalie Rexroad in 1969; he is survived by his daughters Carolyn Hays of Spring, Texas; Joan (Kenneth) Roman of Peachtree City, Georgia; granddaughters Natalie (Brennan) Johnson of Irving, Texas; Stephanie Roman of Atlanta, Georgia; great-grandchildren Payton, Ashton, Merritt and Maddox Johnson; and other relatives and friends. Calling hours are Friday 5-8 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton and one hour prior to services Saturday (10-11 AM) in the Church of the Savior. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 AM in the Church of the Savior United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Fashbaugh officiating. Final resting place is North Lawn Cemetery.
