Melvin B. Sommers, age 80, of Hartville, passed away at 5:10 PM on Wednesday September 18, 2013 at Akron Hospital. Mel was born on December 15, 1932 in Uniontown to Ben and Savilla (Miller) Sommers. Mel spent much of his working life in the soft water business. Many area people recognize Mel through his business, Mel's Soft Water which began in 1974. Mel enjoyed many activities and spent his leisure time golfing, bowling, fishing, going to his children and grandchildren's sporting events, and cheating at cards and board games with his grandchildren. Mel is survived by his wife, Alice (Miller) Sommers and children Marlen of Hawaii, Margaret Hostetler, Marsha Mitchell, Mark all of Hartville, Monica Austin of South Carolina, Mitchell of Greentown and Matthew of Hartville. He is also survived by brothers Simon of Uniontown and Andy of Canton, and sister Amanda of Indiana along with 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by brothers Mahlon, Atlee and Elmer and granddaughter Mandy Kay Sommers. Calling hours are Friday (TODAY) 4-7 PM at Hartville Mennonite Church and an hour prior to services Sat 10-11 AM. Funeral services are Saturday 11 AM in the church with Pastors Ross Miller and Henry Shrock officiating. Final resting place is the church cemetery.
