Obituary

Max Miller Hostetler, age 87, of Canton, passed away Friday evening, May 29, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 26, 1921 to Garrison R. and Mabel V. Hostetler. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1939 and also from Mount Union College where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Max served in the Army Air Corps during WWII where his plane was shot down during a mission in Germany on July 19,1944 and was a POW, MIA until May of 1945. After the war he worked at Canton Storage which was family owned and operated, then worked for the Canton AAA and later retired from the Stark County Board of Education. Max generously served the communities where he lived and worked. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Canton, a 60 year member of Canton Lodge #60 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, and received the Meritorious Service Award in 2006 from Scottish Rite. He was a former member of the Canton Rotary Club, American Legion Canton Post 44, Nazir Grotto and Tadmor Temple. Max enjoyed many sports including golf, tennis, skiing, bowling, canoeing, fishing and camping. He served on the National Ski Patrol. Preceded in death by a brother Don Hostetler. Survived by his wife Martha Grenfell Hostetler; two sons, Gary (Paula) Hostetler, Mark (Mary Jo) Hostetler; daughter, Martha (Dale) Mickey; grandchildren, Anne and Wade Mickey; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Percy & Maria Grenfell, Helen Hissem of Cuyahoga Falls, Sandy Hostetler of Old Washington, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Hall officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday 2-4:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton. A Masonic service will be held on Tuesday evening at 5:45 p.m. in the funeral home.
