Obituary

Mary Alice Guy Mary Alice Guy, age 90, formerly of Canton, passed away Friday morning, May 16, 2014, at Flesher's Fairview Health Care in Fairview, NC. She was born in Canton on May 10, 1924, to her parents, the late David Newton and Minnie Alice (First) Owen. Mary Alice was a 1942 graduate of Lehman High School and enjoyed strong friendships throughout her life with her fellow classmates. Their senior year was interrupted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and Mary was recruited to work in the business office of Monarch Rubber Company in Hartville. She alternated weeks of attending school and working until her high school graduation, and then continued her employment. Her sweetheart, Van Guy, also a Lehman grad, suspended his college education at Ohio State University and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in November of 1944. Two weeks later, on November 18, they were married. Mary Alice was a loving wife and mother, and worked as a bookkeeper for many years at Ohio Air Products. She was an avid tennis player until the age of 80, having played at Congress Lake Club, Edgewood Tennis Club, and also the Hall of Fame Fitness Center. She also enjoyed music, and with her friends attended many productions at the Metropolitan Opera in Cleveland, Blossom Center, and the Canton Symphony. Mary was a life-long member of the First Christian Church in Canton, where she was active in the Loyal Ruth's Class and the Christian Women's Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Van Guy, Jr, as well as five brothers, David, Maurice, Robert, Ralph, and Harry Owen; two sisters, Dorothy Rebillot and Maxine Jones, and three step-sisters, Helen Diefenbach, Ruth Miller and Mildred Jones. Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Anne (Lloyd) Davis of Black Mountain, NC, Barbara Inzina of Buffalo, NY, and her son Malcolm Van (Elyn) Guy III of Canton; four grandchildren, Ben Davis of Albemarle, NC, Sarah (Mark) Jackson of Asheville, NC, Malcolm Van Guy IV of Canton, and Jessica Inzina of Buffalo, NY; five great grandchildren, Thomas, Mary Taylor, and Jane Jackson of Asheville, NC, and Emma and John Davis of Albemarle, NC. Mary Alice is also survived by her beloved sister, Jeanette Owen Hissner of Canal Fulton. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Canton Christian Home Chapel with Jeff Bullock, minister, officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior on Sat. from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
